Using AI to Recognize and Generate Flags merges visual design with the cutting-edge technology of AI neural networks. In an innovative take on the semiotics of national and communal identity, Henderson and Hopson are collaborating to develop an AI algorithm (Convolutional Neural Networks and Generative Adversarial Networks) that, after being trained on real national flags of the world, can generate its own flag designs. The project questions what elements of our thinking can be replicated by algorithms and whether humans distinguish between AI and human-generated designs.
