This project involves reconstructing the complex history of a visit to Tuscaloosa by Booker T. Washington, organized by Jeremiah Barnes, a former enslaved campus laborer. The goal of this project is to recreate for modern audiences Washington’s address at Tuscaloosa’s First African Baptist Church, complete with written and sung material.
In addition to the recreated performance, this project will include an immersive online component.
At 5:30 pm on April 16th, Barnes, Washington & The University of Alabama: Recreating the 1910 Event for Understanding the Afterlives of Slavery in the 21st Century will be held. This event will showcase a collaborative project recreating the 1910 speech given by Booker T. Washington in Tuscaloosa at the invitation of a former enslaved campus-laborer turned educator.
